The new landmark in the forestry corridor of Chiayi City, Song of the Forest, is the work of artist Wang Wen-Chi, using wood, railroad tracks, yellow rattan and stone provided by the Forestry Bureau to recreate the glory of Chiayi's former role as "Timber Capital" of Taiwan.
The design imagery invokes the theme of a towering ancient tree and the Alishan train tracks, creating a tranquil tower for the mind - striped wood surrounds the main body, as if the tree is coiled up and embracing the clouds; a large number of bundled wood sections are stacked in the shape of a tower, evoking the once glorious forestry industry of Chiayi. The copper woven dome reveals the magnificent clouds in the sky, offering visitors a look at the sun and the moon; the rattan woven walkway is used to enter and exit the main body of the work as if walking through a cave. The steel-frame gabion at the base is surrounded by rocks, encapsulating the ecological relationship with the soil of the mountain and forest, setting off the unique scene of a flatland forest.
